The project aims to modernise the existing railway infrastructure to increase the capacity of Baikal - Amur railroad in the direction of the Far East sea terminals and cross border points. Ulak station connects Elginskoye Coal Mine, which is the largest coking coal deposit in Russia and one of the largest in the world, to the country’s railroad network.

On 14 February, the new second track at the section of Baikal – Amur railway between Ulak and Verkhnezeisk was officially opened to train traffic. Construction of the second track is part of the BAM-2 Project.
