The international scientific workshop “Design and Construction of the Bridge over the Ob River (Bugrinsky Bridge)” was held in Novosibirsk on 29 – 30 May 2014.
The workshop was organised by Institute Stroyproekt JCS, Sibmost JSC, AMOST Fund (Association of Russian Bridge Builders) and Russian National Group of IABSE. The Workshop was held within the framework of the Third Siberian Transport Forum under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport of Russia.
The workshop participants were welcomed by Director of State Road Policy Department of the Russian Ministry of Transport Mr. Kostuchenko, Deputy Director of Federal Road Agency Mr. Smirnov, Acting Road and Transport Minister of Novosibirsk Region Mr. Titov, Vice-Mayor of Novosibirsk Mr. Ksenzov, and Director of Regional Road Agency Mr. Gromenko, Executive Director of AMOST Fund Mr. Mozalyov, General Director of Stroyproekt Mr. Zhurbin and President of Sibmost Mr. Koshkin.
The workshop was attended by Russian and international experts, including over 100 specialists from the largest Russian bridge construction companies, clients of transport projects, design and research companies, construction contractors as well as Russian and foreign manufacturers of dedicated equipment and machinery. The delegates had an opportunity to visit the project site.
The design and erection method of the Ob River Bridge do not have analogues in the world practice: the central span is a network arch, 380 m long and 70 m high. The arch span was launched at a 45o angle. The experts from a Swiss company VSL are now monitoring installation of the cable system.
• Project background and main technical and architectural solutions
• Bridge design and the deck structural analysis
• Erection method
• Cable system
• Deck steel fabrication
• Quality control and structural monitoring
The reports and presentations were of great interest to the delegates and were broadly discussed. Closing the workshop, Alexei Zhurbin thanked everyone for their interest and the management of Sibmost for their hospitality. Mr. Zhurbin underlined that the conference was a significant event for the bridge construction industry because professional discussions and workshops are not so often there, and suggested having a tradition to arrange similar events when completing new large bridges and engineering projects.

Ob River Crossing – Bugrinsky Bridge in Novosibirsk
Bugrinsky Bridge is the third bridge across the Russia’s largest river Ob in Novosibirsk. The bridge is part of South-West transit highway, which links the M-51 Baikal and M-52 Chuisky Trakt motorways.
The network arch of the bridge resembles the city’s coat of arms, which features an arch bridge and a red bow.
An unconventional launching procedure on a vertical circular curve was chosen for erection of the arch, which required minimum of auxiliary steel structures and enabled the shortest construction time.
In 2016, the project received a FIDIC Award of Merit for demonstrating innovation, quality, professional excellence, principles of transparency and integrity, sustainability and respect for the environment.
